Francis Adora Brown's ice house elevator conveyor invention.

AN OGDEN MAN'S INVENTION

The ice at the Union Pacific ice house was yesterday being hoisted into the refrigerator cars with great rapidity and in a new manner. The change was due to a machine devised by Francis A. Brown, a grandson of Utah's well known pioneer, James Brown.  As every one at all familiar with the work of handling ice knows, the great difficulty is in the shifting of the heavy blocks. This is expecially difficult about cars having all to be done by hand with the on and off grappling hooks; but Mr. Brown's invention obviated that diffulty. It consists of an enless chain running on sprockets and having hooks that grapple the ice and as the sprocket revolves carrying it upward until it is desired to drop it. It can be adjusted so as to elevate the ice any distance within the length of the chain and drop it at the required time.
Yesterday Mr. Brown put in seven big cakes of ice, weighing in all about 1,400 pounds, and they were swung in place with less expenditure of energy than is usually expended in putting one cake in place. The Herald reporter saw Mr. Brown, the inventor, and learned that a patent has been applied for, and there being no conflicting design; it is promised as soon as the application can go through the routine channels.
John Weddeburn & Co., the patent attorneys having the business in hand, have awarded Mr. Brown a silver medal on recommendation of

Francis Adora Brown's conveyor invention
a committee appointed by them to look over the various designs of their clients and report those of greatest merit.
Mr. Brown is a blacksmith employed by the Union Pacific in Ogden, but resides in Layton. He says he conceived the idea of the ice elevator two years ago, but did not carry it out until last winter when with the assistance of the Union Pacific, he constructed this machine and applied for the patent. He says the same mechanical principle which he is having patented can be used in the construction of machines for other purposes, as the moving of stone blocks or even the elevation of earth or water.

Francis Adora Brown died at 40 years of age on June 27, 1902 at Osmond, Uintah, Wyoming.

SAD AND TRAGIC DEATH

Francis A. Brown killed in a shrilling runaway - Star Valley News.
Special Correspondence.
Afton, Uinta Co., Wyo., June 30.
--It is with profound sorrow we chronicle the death of one of our best citizens, Francis A. Brown, of Osmond Ward. On June 27 [1902] Brother Brown went to the Gardner sawmill, a distance of about five miles, for a load of lumber. On returning from the mill and coming down some of the steep hills, part of the load slid forward and started the horses off at a terrific speed. Although a man of much strength he could not control the horses but was thrown forward in front of the wagon, the wheels passing over his stomach. After the accident Mr Brown succeeded in overtaking the horses and turn them back, himself having to crawl on hands and knees a distance of half a mile, being unable to mount or walk. His cries attracted the attention of a young man working in a field near by, who immediatley came to his assistance, and procured a horse and buggy and took the unfortunate man home. Dr. [Lunniro?} was immediately summoned. Laying hands and medical skill were of no avail, Brother Brown succumbed to his injuries at 12 o'clock that night. The deceased, who was 40 years old, he has a wife and eight children to mourn his untimely death, also a father, brother and sister, besides a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in the large Afton meeting house and were largely attended, the Afton choir rendering very sweet and appropriate music. Consoling remarks were made by Stake Prest. George Osmond, Counselor A.V. Call, Bishop Osborn Low and Elders O. Eggleston, Edmund McLatchle, Thomas Walton, and Richard Hardman. All testified to the sterling character and faithfulness of Brother Brown who died a devoted and true Latter-day Saint. The casket was generally covered with flowers and a buggy cortege followed the remains to the final resting place in the Afton cemetery. The grave was dedicated by Thomas F. Burton.
Frank Brown, as he was best know was a genius, a mechanic and blacksmith of great skill, and a man that will be greatly missed by the people of the ward in which he resided and by the community at large.
