James Francis Brown was born as the first of four children on January 4, 1888 at Ogden, Weber, Utah, to his parents Francis Adora Brown and Emily Ann Weaver.
James met and later married. Katie Barwick on January 7, 1922 at Ogden, Weber, Utah. Katie is the daughter of Lawrence Barwick Sr. and his third wife, Mary Josephine Newman. The family was from Sumter County, South Carolina.

Lawrence Newton Barwick, Sr.
Katie Barwick's father, Lawrence Barwick was born April 9, 1836 and died August 10, 1913. He first married Henrietta A. Andrews, daughter of Robert W. and Mary Elizabeth Connors Andrews, and granddaughter of Charles P. and Unity Weeks Connors. They were married on December 14, 1863. Henrietta and Lawrence had eight children, including a son, Lawrence Jr. Henrietta was born in 1843 and died July 17, 1883 in childbirth with her last son, Charles Henrietta Barwick. He married Susan Jane Webb on October 21, 1883 and had 5 children with her. She died in 1897, and he then married Mary Josephine Newman and had 4 more children.
Lawrence was a nurse in the Civil War along with three of his brothers. He enlisted June 19, 1861 at Columbia, SC as a private in Co. C, Infantry, Hampton Legion, and was discharged September 10, 1861 for a hernia. He re-enlisted March 25, 1862 at Ashpoo, SC as a private in Co. A, 14 Battalion, SC Cavalry, detailed as a nurse in a hospital from Sept. 1862-Dec. 1862. He later transferred to Co. A 14 Batt'n became Co. H, 5th SC Calvary on January 18, 1863 and on April 18, 1864, Private L.N. Barwick transferred to Co. I, 23rd SC Infantry.
The Barwick's are first found in Northumberland, from very ancient times where they took their name from the county of Berwick to the north.
Some of the first settlers of this name were: Lawrence Barwick who settled in Virginia in 1645; Thomas Barwick who settled in Dominica in 1774; Thomas Barwick settled in Virginia in 1622; Thomas Barwick settled in New Jersey in 1677.
