Bishop Albert Daniel Thurber was the commander of the expedition, so the lead man is most likely Thurber not OPB.. OPB was most likely in El Paso with Anthony Ivins arranging accommodations for the exiting Mormons, etc.

The handwritten message under the photo reads as follows:

This picture was taken as we were on our way to El Paso 1917. This is our first car a Dodge. We had to fix tires all the way. O.P. said he was a jinx because everybody he rode with had trouble! Ha! [We thought] That you might like this Jacline.

[An aside: Greer Spilsbury Skousen won a bronze Olympic medal as a member of Mexico's 1936 Olympic Basketball team held in Berlin. The United States won the gold, Canada won the silver.
Owen Skousen also won many sports records and awards.]

It was a sad month for OPB, his first wife Mattie Romney died two weeks before, on January 16, 1943.
