Her life was one of struggle and privations, with a longing for the better things in life which were partially realized during the last ten years of her life. No sacrifice was too great for her to make, that her children might have the advantage of an education which was denied her due to pioneer hardships and her early marriage.
She was a devoted wife and mother. Her marriage was a happy one inspite of financial hardships, and she made the most of the scant opportunities that came her way.
In the old time dances she was the "life of the party", she and her husband being the best dancers on the floor, and up until her death, they enjoying dancing. Her husband and children were all musically inclined and made the home ring with his violine and choruses which all joined in. While Mary Eliza was not blessed with a natural talent for singing, I remember with an aching tenderness in my heart the one song she sang to all of us: "When the Springtime Comes Little Annie." I never can forget it.
When The Springtime Comes Again
Once more Little Annie I must leave you
We shall part at the end of the lane
But promise me Little Annie
You will wait for me til springtime comes again.
When the sun shines down on the mountain
And the wild sheep are wandering all alone
When the birds and the bees are a humming
Makes me think that springtime won't be very long.
When springtime comes on the mountain
And the wild flowers are scattered o'er the plain
I shall watch for the bees to return to their trees
And I'll be waiting when springtime comes again.
Now springtime is here Little Annie
I am on my way back to the lane
For you promised me Little Annie
You'd be waiting when springtime comes again.

Mary Eliza rarely went to church when the children were young, but she sent all of us to Sunday School, except the baby, with father who was in the superintendency, later in the Bishopric, as well as Ward Chorister.
Mother's dresses and hats, what few she had, were made over to fit me, her eldest daughter. In later years she was a Relief Society teacher, and enjoyed the work very much, then she became a counselor in the Y.L.M.I.A. [Young Ladies Mutual Improvement Association].
She and father had great joy in their last years together, traveling around the country in their buggy, and went to Idaho to visit their beloved brothers David and Joseph.

They also made a trip on the train to San Franciso which was one of the outstanding events in her life.
Mary Eliza was the soul of hospitality and our home was often the stopping place for travelers to and from Idaho to Salt Lake City, or some less fortunate person who needed what she so freely gave, kindness, food, and lodging, even though the family had to double or treble up to make room.. She was an excellent cook, never used recipes, but never had a failure, an immaculate housekeeper, and a true neighbor and friend.
She was one of the most enthusiastic promoters of a Brown Family Organization and used her influence with her brothers and sisters, who were devoted to her, to have a committee appointed to raise funds to build a monument in honor of her father, Captain James Brown, Jr.
Mary Eliza died suddenly of pneumonia in Ogden on March 20, 1903, in her 56th year.
