Lucy Brown Rose 1842-1934
Lucy Brown Rose

Born: December 17, 1842 at Versailles, Brown County, Illinois

Died:  June or August 28, 1934 at Farmington, Davis, Utah

Compiled by Lucy Brown Archer

Lucy Brown was born 27 December 1842, at [Versailles,] Brown County, Illinois to Daniel Brown and Elizabeth Stephens Brown.

During the early part of 1846, when Lucy was three years old, the Brown Family decided to follow the Mormons westward. Daniel was able to buy some oxen to help in the move. He also sold the farm, but reserved the crop, as he had to wait until after the harvest for part of his pay. He thought that by providing two good teams and wagons, with tools, he could send his son, James [Stephens Brown] out into Iowa territory, along with his wife's brother, Alexander Stephens, and his two maiden sisters, Mary (Polly) Brown and Nancy Brown, where they could build a cabin or two, and plant some corn and other food. Daniel was to harvest the crops and follow along as soon as possible. Daniel went with them as far as the headquarters of the Grand River in Iowa, and then left them there while he returned for the rest of the family and the crops.

When Daniel brought the rest of the family after the harvest was completed, he found that his son, James and his brother-in-law, Alexander had joined the Mormon Battalion on the 7th of July 1846, and had marched with that group to California, leaving the two maiden Aunts to tend the crops.

As the rest of the family history is found in Daniel's history, it will not be repeated here, except to say that four year old Lucy accompanied her family on to Harrison County, Iowa, where she grew into womanhood.

Her father owned a large home which was also used as the local hotel. It was called, "Castle Thunder", and it also served as the post office, stagecoach stop, and local saloon. No doubt, Lucy was kept busy helping with the care, cleaning, and cooking for the many guests that might be passing by.

It was in Pottawattamie County, Iowa that Lucy met William Warren Rose, the man she was to marry. In the 1850 Census of that county in houshold #993, we find the family of Abram Rose and Catherine [Nicholson] Rose, with 18 year old William Rose, the eldest child still living at home. The same census, in houshold #1199, we find seven year old Lucy living with her parents in the same district as the Rose family. Harrison County had not yet been established.

William Warren Rose first married Marinda Garner [on December 4, 1853] , born 8 April 1833, in [Lexington, Davidson, North Carolina] Harrison County, Iowa, a daughter of David Garner and Jane Stephens Garner. This Jane Stephens was an Aunt of Lucy's mother, Elizabeth Stephens, making Marinda a first cousin to Lucy's mother.

William W. Rose lived near the Brown homestead and worked for Daniel Brown. He and his first wife had five children, three girls and two boys. During the Civil War he signed up with the 15th Infantry, Company H of the Iowa Volunteers.

On December 23, 1868, William and Marinda were divorced at Magnolia, Harrison County, Iowa.

William Warren Rose was.born 6 May 1832, at Howard, Steuben County, New York, a son of Abraham Rose and Catherine Nicholson Rose. He married (1) Marinda Garner. Marinda died 15 September 1886, at Oakley, Cassia County, Idaho. Their five children were named: Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, Parry Lafayette, Jonathon William, and Elnora.

William married (2) 7 January 1869, at Magnolia, Harrison County, Iowa, to Lucy Brown. He died 30 November 1899, at Farmington, Davis County, Utah. he was buried there 30 November 1899, as Sgt. William Warren Rose.

Lucy and William moved to Utah between 1876 and 1879, and first resided at West Weber, Weber County, Utah. They later moved to Farmington, Davis County, Utah. After the death of William, Lucy lived at Farmington, Utah with her family until the time of her death, 28 June 1934. She is buried beside her husband in the Farmington City Cemetery.

Lucy and William were the parents of five children, four boys and one daughter. The original family Bible that belonged to Lucy and William is in the hands of her granddaughter, Agnes Leone Rose Sherry of Provo, Utah. It has the birth information of each of the children written in Lucy's own handwriting.

Children:

1. Wilburn Foster Rose, born 24 May 1865, at Calhoun, Harrison County, Iowa. He married 19 June 1887, to Elizabeth Rigby, born 30 April 1870, at Centerville, Davis County, Utah, a daughter of Samuel Rigby and Margaret Duncan. She died 17 June 1950, at Provo, Utah County, Utah, and was buried 22 June 1950, at Glenn's Ferry, Elmore County, Idaho. Wilburn died 10 March 1942, and was buried at Glenn's Ferry, Elmore County, Idaho. He was adopted by William Warren Rose and sealed to his mother and William Warren Rose.

2 William Fredrick Rose, born 12 January 1871, at.Calhoun, Harrison County, Iowa. He married 15 January 1894, to Fanny Mahalia Garn. He died 29 January 1945.

3 Guy Newton Rose, born 4 August 1874, at Calhoun, Harrison County, Iowa. He married (1) 10 April 1901, to Hannah Lestie Holdaway. He married (2) He died 23 December 1940.

4 Lulu Wanita Rose born 8 April 1876, at Calhoun, Harrison County, Iowa. She died 1: April 1890 and was buried 5 April 1890, at Farmington, Davis County, Utah. The cemetery record states that she was born 1878, but the family Bible written in Lucy's own handwriting states she was born 1876.

5 William Warren Rose Jr., born 20 August 1879, at West Weber, Weber County, Utah. He married 19 November 1902, to Mabel Lucy Pinder. He died 15 March 1930 at Farmington, Davis, Utah..
