Born: January 20, 1803 at Bracken County (then Mason), Kentucky
Died: May 11, 1879, buried at the Hunt Ranch, Red Rock, Oxford, Bannock, Idaho

U.S. Mormon Battalion Mexican War 1846-1848

Charles Jefferson Hunt is the son of John Hunt and Martha Jenkins Hunt.

In 1821, Illinois moved the county seat of Edwards County from Palmyra, to Albion. Residents of Mt. Carmel felt the county seat should be in Mt. Carmel and not Albion. Four companies of militia marched from Mt. Carmel toward Albion to obtain the county documents stored in the courthouse. The situation was resolved by separating Wabash County from Edwards County at the Bon Pas Creek in 1824. The divided counties remain two of the smallest in Illinois.

Charles Jefferson Hunt married Celia Mounts.on December 1, 1823 at Albion, Edwards County, Illinois.

Charles Hunt married Matilda Nease on the 7th of February 1846 at Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois.

Children of Captain Jefferson Hunt and Celia Mounts Hunt

One of their children is Mary Hunt Black, wife of George David Black, half-brother of Orson Pratt Brown. Mary was two years old, and George was five years old, when they were taken by their parents on the Mormon Battalion Trek and spent the winter of 1846-1847 in Pueblo, CO.

Mexican War Claim for Captain Jefferson Hunt's Pension:

Claim made by Celia Hunt, written by Frank B. Daley, her attorney (and son of Almeda Wilson Daley, who is the daughter of Lewis Dunbar Wilson.)

Celia M. Hunt, age 82 yrs., resident of San Bernardino, State of California, widow of Jefferson Hunt deceased who served under the name of Jefferson Hunt, Reg. of Mormon Battalion, volunteered at Council Bluff, Iowa July 16th 1846 for 1 yr, continued in service 1 yr, service terminated at Los Angeles California July 1847.

Celia Hunt states full description of her husband at time of enlistment: 6 ft. tall, light complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, age 42 yrs, 180 lbs weight. She married Jefferson Hunt in Albion, Edwards Co. Ill. Dec. 1823, by Allen Emmerson, Justice of the Peace, that her name before said marriage was Celia Mounts and that she had not remarried since death of Jefferson Hunt and that neither she nor husband had been previously married. Said her husband Jefferson Hunt died at Oxford, Territory Idaho May 11, 1879. Place of residence of herself and Jefferson Hunt since date of discharge from Army: Utah, California, Idaho.

Mrs. Hunt's sister Jane Mounts Morse and her daughter Harriet Hunt Mayfield signed her claim. Celia Hunt's own signature to the claim appeared thus:

This Monument is in memory of Captain Charles Jefferson Hunt who served in the Mormon Battalion. He is buried behind Red Rock in a small cemetery along with his family and other pioneers.

The following inscription appears on the plaque of this monument:

"Captain Jefferson Hunt, soldier, pioneer, and churchman. Born January 20, 1804 in Kentucky. Died May 11, 1879 in Idaho. Charles Jefferson Hunt served in the Mormon Battalion as captain of company A and as assistant executive officer in its historic march from Council Bluffs Iowa to San Diego, California 1846-1847. His service on the commendation of all whom served with him. Under appointment by President Brigham Young in 1851, Captain Hunt was guide for the pioneers to San Bernardino, California. His pioneering services also included Provo, Parawan, and Huntsville {which bears his name} in Utah and Oxford, Idaho. A convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he was loyal, obedient, and faithful to the end."

The following speech was given at the dedication of this monument by his great grandson, Jesse A. Udall on October 2, 1950:

This twice life-size monument celebrate Capt Jefferson Hunt negotiating for supplies with Ramirez, the Tucson Mexican merchant. The monument is where the negotiations more or less took place in the Presidio. A grandson of the original Ramirez modeled for the sculptor. The Mormon private behind is getting ready to post the American Colors for the first time in Arizona in 1846. The Mexicans were out manned by the Mormons and the encounter was peaceful. The statue symbolizes the peacefulness of the two cultures coming together in wartime. The Mormons respected the property and rights of the Mexicans and avoided unnecessary bloodshed. In the foreground is the branches of an olive tree, the symbol of peace. ---Mormon Battalion Monument 7 in Tucson
