Captain Charles Jefferson Hunt

Tyler records: " Sister Celia Hunt who often took nourishment and said comforting words to Joseph (17 year old, Mormon Battalion musician suffering from the ague, Joseph William Richards, brother of Apostle Franklin Dewey Richards), giving him the last food he ever ate, a few hours before his death, speaks of him as among the most noble young men she ever knew. Joseph never complained of his lot, he died November 21, 1846, four days after Captain Brown's company entered Pueblo. His death saddened the camp .(See Ricketts, page 29, 237)

These four days since their arrival had also been filled with "greetings which occured between comrades and old friends." Captain Higgins' company had been separated from the Battalion on September 16 at the Arkansas River, before the desert march into Santa Fe. Celia was pleased to meet William Decatur Kartchner and his wife Margaret Jane Casteel Kartchner with their infant daghter Sarah Ann Kartchner, who proved to be the first white child born in Colorado. From them she learned of the sad death of Milton Kelley, which occurred November 4, 1846, a little more than two weeks previous to their arrival. This was a blow to the Hunt family for Milton was their cousin. He was the son of Jefferson's older sister Jane Catherine Hunt Kelley, and had been the only one of Jefferson's people to accept the Gospel message he had taken them. His death was due to pneumonia taken from over exposure on a hunting expedition.  Celia lost no time ging to the grief-stricken wife and being with her when she gave birth to her baby, soon after her husband's death."
