Susan Brown Jackson

Born: c.1783
Died:  18??

Compiled by Lucy Brown Archer

Susan Brown was born sometime between 1783 or 1793 in Rowan, now Davidson County, North Carolina, to James Brown Sr. (1753-1823) and Mary Polly Williams Emerson (1760-1832) as the possibly the fourth of nine children.

Susan married Sion (Siren) Jackson on February 26, 1803 at Lick Creek, Rowan County, North Carolina. Some records approximate their marriage around 1815 with both spouses birthdates aroung 1793. Sion was born around 1785 - 1793, perhaps in Rowan County, North Carolina. Either date coincides to make him around 18 years old at the time of their marriage. The later dates correspond more naturally with their children's birthdates.

It is not known how many children Susan had. She had at least two boys.

1
Homer Jackson

Born: 1819 at Davidson County, North Carolina

Married: probably unmarried

Died: after 1870 census at French Gulch, Shasta, California

2
James Jackson

Born: 1823 at Brown County, Illinois

Married: Sarah Jane Brown on 16 March 1845

Died: 1893 at  Versailles, Brown County, Illinois.

In 1831, Daniel Brown, Susan's youngest brother lost his second house to fire, and he decided that he would try his luck in a new location. Daniel left North Carolina, going north to Illinois. He took his own family, his two sisters (Mary Polly Brown and Nancy Brown), his two brothers-in-law (John Stephens (1811-1870) and Alexander Stephens (1840-1916)), and his nephew (Susan's son) Homer Jackson.  Homer later moved to western Iowa with his Uncle Daniel but in according to a1854 letter, and 1860 and 1870 census records, Homer was living in French Gulch, Shasta, California.

In the early 1840's, most of the Brown family who had moved to Illinois, which then included, Captain James Brown's family, and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the "Mormons" as they were nicknamed after the Book of Mormon they held equally with the Bible.

In the spring of 1844, Susan's brother, Captain James Brown, returned to his native state of North Carolina after a ten year absence, where he commenced preaching his new found religion to his relatives and many others in the community. Brown, now in the capacity of a Mormon missionary, made a visit to his sister Susan's home. When Siren opened the door and Brown commenced to preach Mormonism, "Old Siren", as he was commonly called, became wroth and with an oath of death to his malefactor, he seized his gun, rushed to the door, and took aim. Susan, Siren's wife and James' sister, was pleased to see her brother but she had to warn him to flee from her home as her husband was in a rage. James the missionary's retreat was hastened by the report of Siren's rifle and the whizzing bullets screaming past his head. This account was reported by Captain James Brown and is found in Tullidge's History of Utah, Volume II, pages 99-100. [I am not sure this title is correct, however, Edward W. Tullidge did write the History of Salt Lake City and Its Founders: Incorporating a Brief History of the Pioneers of Utah; With Steel Portraits of Representative Men; Together With a Carefully Arranged Index and an Elaborate Appendix]

Siren Jackson, age 55, a laborer is found in the 1850 Brown County, Illinois census, living alone.

The 1860 census for Brown County, Illinois, as well as the cemetery records of the Westside Cemetery at Versailles, Brown County, Illinois, records the following information concerning Susan's son, James Jackson:

"James Jackson, born 1823, in Davidson County, North Carolina.
Died 1893 at Versailles, Brown County, Illinois.
Buried in the Westside Cemetery of that city.
He married Sarah Jane Brown, born 1827 in Ohio; she died 1908 at Versailles, Brown, Illinois.
They had the following children: ....."

In a letter from Daniel Brown to his son James Stephens Brown, written April 16, 1854, Daniel wrote: "I received a letter from Omer (Homer) Jackson, Shasty (Shasta) City, California the same day I received yours. It was dated the 6th of February. He was well and doing well. James (Homer) left Shasity (Shasta) City and started back for Illinois that same day".

The 1860 and 1870 census of Shasta County, California show Homer Jackson living at French Gulch, unmarried.
