Lawrence "Larry" "Moon" Bagley 1928-2005
Larry Bagley

Margene Bailey Bagley and Lawrence "Larry" "Moon" Miles Bagley (1928-2005, son of attorney Grant Bagley) are the parents of Will Bagley, a historian in Salt Lake City; Kevin Bagley, an attorney in San Diego; and Patrick "Pat" Bagley, an editorial cartoonist for The Salt Lake Tribune; their daughter, Lisa Bagley Payne, is a children's clothing shop owner in Maui. Larry graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City.

After his move to California, Larry was elected the Mayor of Oceanside, California in 1980, 1984, 1988-1992 . Larry served longer than any other mayor. Two contractors in California told his son, "Your father is the only honest politician we've ever met." A wonderful epitaph for an objective, veracious man.

Governor Scott Matheson once said of Grant Bagley, "he is the most ethical attorney I ever met." It is a family trait and tradition to be above reproach. Will Bagley has said that his honesty is extremely important to him. "If my ethics are ever questioned it is usually by people who lack it themselves."

Pat Bagley c. 1980Pat Bagley - self-portrait cartoonPat Bagley c. 2002

Will Bagley's equally famous brother, Pat Bagley, was also born in Salt Lake City but was raised in Oceanside, Southern California, where their father was mayor. Politics was an early and abiding interest in their family. As part of a high school civics class, Pat participated in a PBS interview of Ronald Reagan. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1978.

Pat was hired as The Salt Lake Tribune's first political cartoonist in 1979. His family roots in Utah combined with his love of the land and quirky people makes him a a first rate commentator on the local culture. No one takes a chain saw to Utah with more loving care.

Over the years his cartoons have appeared in Time Magazine, The National Review,The Washington Post, The Guardian of London and The Los Angeles Times, and Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year. He is the winner of several cartooning awards. His syndicated cartoons appear in newspapers around the country.

During the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics Bagley's "unofficial" Utah-themed pins were a tremendous hit, sometimes selling for as much as $80. He continues to create new pins and is the only recognized "pin artist" in the world today.

His many books include Oh My Heck!, This is the Place (a young adult history of Utah), Dinosaurs of Utah, Welcome to Utah, and the nationally acclaimed Clueless George Goes to War. The father of two, he says he is especially well loved by dogs and small children
