Pvt. Donald was born in Lanark Township, Lanark County, Ontario about 1826. I have failed to establish an exact DOB but I'm pretty sure he was the youngest of seven children who I have dated fairly accurately so an 1826 DOB must be very close. He moved (with his brother-in-law Thomas Forsyth) to Lambton County, Ontario in 1839, to Galesburg, Michigan in 1843, to Nauvoo in 1845 and evacutated with the Forsyth family in March 1846. There is an IGI posting that says he died 05 Nov 1847 (no POD given). His name appears on the Batallion Memorial in Union Cemetery at Salt Lake City among those who "died along the trail from Iowa to California in 1846-1848 and lie in unknown graves" . Son of Otis Shumway and Sally Wetherell Shumway. At age 17, he went to eastern Iowa, then the border of civilization. A few years later he went to Santa Fe, NM with a company of cavalry and was connected with the baggage train accompanying the command of Col. John C. Fremont, with Kit Carson as guide, both of whom he became well acquainted. He was a veteran of the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican War, drawing a pension from the government. He was in California when the first discovery of gold produced such an excitement throughout the country and he did a prosperous merchandizing business in mining camps. He married Charlotte Jane Fleet on February 4, 1857. They were the parents of five children. In 1858 he went to Oregon, settling the Dalles and served two terms as Wasco Co. sheriff. He embraked on a stock raising business with a partner and tried several locations, before going to Camas and there they added a butchering business to other interests. In this vicinity he served as County Commissioner and Judge of the Probate Court. He held high office in the Oregon State Grange and was eminently a man of affairs.
