Alice Ann Shill (1901-1982)
Alice Ann Shill was born 7 March 1901, in Lehi, Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona. Her father was Milo Goulding Shill, and her mother was Alice Ann Simpkins. Both her parents were born in Utah, of English extraction. Alice Ann Simpkins Shill died on 28 March 1901, three weeks following the birth. Alice Ann was a motherless babe, not yet a month old.
Alice Ann's Aunt, Eliza Charlotte Simpkins Nelson, younger sister of her mother, became the surrogate mother. The death of his wife was difficult for Milo, and he grieved deeply. He took care of his older children: Oscar Milo, age nine; and Caroline Harriet, age seven.
Alice Ann was loved and well-cared for; however, as she grew from baby to childhood, she was often in the care of others. Her older sister often watched over her, as well as other relatives. Her Aunt Charlotte (Tottie) was the one she remembers as "Mother." She was often in the home of her maternal grandparents, the Simkins.
Alice Ann acquired the nickname of "Babe," and those close to her used this label for her entire life. She grew up in Lehi Valley and had a happy childhood. She knew different home environments, living sometimes with her father, and other times with close family members. Because she was a bright girl, a good student, quite personable, pretty, with dark Shill skin and large brown eyes—and a motherless child—she was favored in the Lehi community. Everyone knew Babe and loved her.
Alice Ann Shill Boyle died on September 17, 1982 at Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona and was buried on September 21, 1982 at Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona.
