Death Calls Widely Known Matrons
Mrs. Phoebe Shaubut, 82, old-time and well-known Deer Lodge matron, died Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's hospital. Mrs. Shaubut came to Deer Lodge as a girl and resided here since 1874. She was a member of the original local chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and a charter member of the Deer Lodge Federated Women's club. Phoebe belonged to the Presbyterian church.
Mrs. Shaubut was born in Weber County, Ogden, Utah, May 14, 1859. She was the granddaughter of Captain James Brown, founder of Ogden, and the widow of the late J. C. Shaubut, Northern Pacific agent who died here 18 years ago.
Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. James Morehead Brown, Ogden.
A niece, Mrs. Leroy Hill, Ogden, was with Mrs. Shaubut until yesterday. In addition to Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Shaubut is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Ogden and in Sacramento, Calif
The body was taken to the Ross funeral home. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Thursday at the Presbyterian church by the Rev. John McR. Lilley.
Pallbearers were Lyle Downs, Butte; Claude Bielenberg, J. A. Grant, V. J. Roberts, Warren Trask, Jerome Wyckoff and Fred Valiton. Honorary pallbearers were Chas. Severs, Butte; J. A. Kerruish, Joe Larsen, Ed. Sears, F. A. Steejer, Robert Midtlyng, Lee Williams, and Daniel B. Hertz, Jr.
