Martha Ann Garner was born on January 18, 1840 near Lima, Hancock, Illinois. She is the fourth of ten children born to Philip Garner Sr. (1808-1872) and Mary Hendrick/Hedrick Garner. (1811-1892). In the autumn of 1845, when Martha was only five years old, her family was forced into Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois because of mob violence. In 1846 she was in the general exodus of the Saints (as the Latter-day Saints are referred) from Nauvoo with her family when they went to Iowa. Martha's father, Philip Garner Sr., joined the Mormon Battalion [Company B] and she and her family were left to live in their wagon for fifteen months while he was gone. After his return, they traveled to Utah in the George Albert Smith Wagon Company which arrived in Salt Lake Valley, October 27, 1849. They continued on north to settle the Ogden area. Martha's family helped build a fort for protection from the Indians. Martha married Benjamin Chamberlin Critchlow and they lived with his family while he worked in the canyon cutting lumber to build a home. They had five children. In 1863, her two year old son, [Benjamin Philip Critchlow], fell from a rocking chair into the fire and overturned a kettle of scalding water. She nursed him constantly for eleven days. Finally, he opened his eyes looked around and eventually was healed with no permanent scars. Martha had poor health for many years. While on crutches, the Relief Society of the First Ward in Ogden was organize and Martha was chosen as second counselor to the president. In 1880, Martha was chosen as president. Notwithstanding her poor health, she continued to minister unto the sick and afflicted, help to wash and dress the dead, made quilts for the beds of poor children to keep them warm in the winter. Because of her faith and a blessing from Patriarch William Smith, she was able to put down her crutches and never used them again. She had been walking on crutches for seven years. Martha supported her husband as he served as bishop and supported him again when he was called to participate in polygamy. Martha accepted the additional family responsibilities whle her husband sent undrground to avoid being captured by the federal marshalls. Martha passed away at the age of eighty-three years.
