Lydia Lucina Abbott Squires

Born: February 25, 1833 at Hornellsville, Steuben, New York
Died: September 18, 1919 at Long Beach, Los Angeles, California

Compiled by Lucy Brown Archer

Lydia Lucina (Lucinda) Abbott was born on February 25, 1833 at Hornellsville, Steuben, New York, the fourth of eight children. Her parents are Stephen Joseph Abbott (1804-1843) and Abigail Smith Abbott (1806-1889).

Lydia Lucina met, and later married Edwin Saxton Squires or Squire (1820-1887) on September 9, 1861. Edwin is the son of Bishop Squires (1771-1858) and Charlotte Weld Squires (1781-1828).

"Wah Wah Springs [Beaver County, Utah] was settled in July, 1870 by Edwin S. Squires and Lydia Abbott Squires, who were on their way to locate in California. They had a herd of cattle and when they got to Nevada they were asked to pay a tax on the cattle. They had already paid a tax on them in Utah; so they came back as far as Wah Wah Springs, and homesteaded the land. They reared three daughters, Loretta, Theressa, and Abigail. Loretta Squires married William Calvert Bowman; Theressa Squires married Joseph De Meulle, and Abigail Squires married Owen Grover.

Mr and Mrs. Squires had a splendid ranch, and orchard of peaches, apricots and almonds, and they kept a hotel--a stopping place for travelers. They always took care of anyone who needed meals and a bed. They kept a change of horses ready for the mail stage, as it was on the stage route to Ely, Nevada.

Edwin Squires died in 1888 and was buried at Wah Wah. One son-in-law, Owen Grover, took care of the ranch for a few years. He had worked there about two years when he married Abigail. Joseph De Muelle owned a small place east of the main ranch. Early in the eighties there was an iron smelter operating a couple of miles from the ranch and Edwin Squires ran a store on the ranch for a couple of years for the benefit of the workers at the smelter.

Later Wah Wah Springs and the DeMuelle springs were both sold to Samuel Newhouse. Both springs were dug out and the water from them was piped down and carried in one pipe to Newhouse. There was an abundance of water from these two springs.

Parley Madsen and Wilford Winch own Wah Wah Spirngs now [1951]. Fred Jensen is foreman. They farm and raise stock on the property.--Monuments to Courage--Beaver County--D.U.P. History"--Heart Throbs of the West, Vol. 12, 1951, Page 261.
