BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF HOWARD S. CORAY Autobiography for Dates Between 1817-1888 Howard Coray, son of Silas Coray and Mary Stephens of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania; later came to Utah with their children. Howard was born May 6, 1817, Stevens County, New York. He came to Utah October 1850, John Sharp Company. Howard Coray married Martha Jane Knowlton, February 6, 1841, in Illinois. Martha was a member of the Nauvoo Relief Society; she served as the secretary of the first Relief Society organized in Salt Lake. Personal friend of the Prophet and Patriarch, Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith. Wrote a history of Joseph, including his mother's memory of the Prophet.
Martha had a fair knowledge of law, philosophy, politics, history, poetry, chemistry, geography and geology. When Brigham Young established the academies he required that each one have at least one woman on its board of trustees. Martha Jane Knowlton Coray (1821-81) was the first woman to serve on the board of trustees of the Brigham Young Academy, which is now called Brigham Young University. Martha Coray was a mother of [nine or] twelve children, assayer, herbalist, church worker, prolific writer, and schoolteacher. Her scholarly interests included biblical studies. She was an earnest and efficient Sunday School worker. She was the daughter of Sidney Algernon Knowlton and Harriet Burnham (1st wife of 7) of Illinois, pioneers of1849. Martha was born June 3, 1821 or 1822. Their children:

I next moved to Provo (1857) and lived here until 1871, doing various kinds of work, farming, clerking, school teaching, building a sawmill and sawing lumber, running a molasses factory and hauling lumber to Fairfield, etc. etc. I was getting on pretty well, until I undertook the sawmill, which resulted in embarrassing me not a little.
In 1871, I homesteaded a gr. section in Juab County and moved on it. Here, I lived continuously until the fall of 1880, when I returned to Provo, bringing with me a sick wife. . . .

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel, then Colonel and commander of the 1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry regiment. He was wounded in the face at the Battle of Fredericksburg. At the Battle of Gettysburg, his regiment was part of Colonel William S. Tilton's brigade that fought against attacking Confederates in the Stony Hill area West of the Wheatfield on July 2, 1863. Under intense fire, he kept his Michigan soldiers on the battle line until he himself was shot and seriously wounded, and had to retreat to the rear of the Union lines. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". A monument to his regiment stands in the Loop on Sickles Avenue in the Gettysburg National Military Park.

The following is a contribution from David E. Fox:
IRA's parents were Edmond Austin Abbott and Nancy Gregory - this info according to his bio-sketch to which he contributed, which appears in the 1882 publication: THE HISTORY of WALWORTH COUNTY, Wisconsin, where he lived from 1878-1885.... He was born in Burns, Allegany County, New York...not in Michigan...He, of course, moved to St. Joseph County (White Pigeon Community, Michigan with his parents in 1835...He first married in 1850 a Roxanna Brown of Elkhart, Indiana - they had a daughter, Harriet Emma Abbott, in 1851..Roxanna died in 1852, he went back to Burr Oak, Michigan that year; was appointed Justice of the Peace there......then later Electa Araminta Shear of Phelps, Ontario, New York (May 19, 1857)..they had 3 children: Charles E. (1858), William C. in 1860, then Carrie P. All were born in Burr Oak.
