 Charles Augustus Davis

Born: October 13, 1810 at Princeton, Worcester, Massachusetts
Died: August 29, 1898 at Spanish Fork, Utah, Utah

Compiled by Lucy Brown Archer

Charles Augustus Davis was born on October 13, 1810 at Princeton, Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of James Davis (10/5/1786 to 9/29/1814) and Myranda Jones Davis (b. 11/16/1784 or 1804).

Charles A. Davis married Catherine Spring on January 10, 1833 at Princeton, Worcester, Massachusetts. Catherine is the daughter of Elisha Spring and Catherine Wheeler Spring, both of Princeton, Massachusetts. Catherine and Charles had one child: James Davis born on August 4, 1837 and died on August 18, 1837 at Princeton, Worcester, Massachusetts.

Charles married his second wife, Ruth Elizabeth Kennan either on March 2 or April 11, 1839 at Hubbardston, Worcester, Massachusetts.  Ruth is the daughter of Andrew Kennan Jr. and Ruth Parminter Kennan of Holden, Worcester, Massachusetts. Ruth and Charles had 12 children.

Charles married his third wife, Emma David in 1835 at Princeton, Worcester, Massachusetts. Emma died at Spanish Fork, Utah, Utah.

Charles married his fourth wife, Abigail Smith Abbott Brown, date unknown, probably after 1852 the year Charles and Ruth arrived in Salt Lake City with the handcart company (possibly the Harman Cutler company). No children from this union.

Charles married his fifth wife, Betsey Parminter.

Charles married his sixth wife, Nancy Flagg in Massachusetts sometime prior to 1845. The marriage may have ended in divorce as records show Nancy Flagg married. Solomon Trask on August 30, 1842 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Nancy is the daughter of Aaron and Susanna Flagg.and she has a twin sister named Sally Flagg, both born on May 28, 1814.

Charles married his seventh wife, Caroline Flagg. Not known if related to Nancy Flagg.

Charls Augustus Davis died on the 29th of August 1898 in Spanish Fork, Utah County, Utah.

Ruth Elizabeth Kennan Davis

Ruth Kennan was born October 13, 1821 in Holden, Worcester, Massachusetts to Andrew Kennan Jr. and Ruth Parminter Kennan, both of Holden, Massachusetts.

Ruth married Charles Augustus Davis on April 11, 1839 (or March 2, 1839) in Hubbardston, Worcester, Massachusetts. She was 17 years old. They had twelve children.

Ruth and Charles had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) in Princeton, Massachusetts, but soon after moved to Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois.

In the Spring of 1846, Ruth was taken critically ill and experience a miraculous healing. She was also privileged to attend the dedication of the Nauvoo Temple. Ruth and Charles were driven from their home and property by ruthless mobs.

They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1852, and settled in Palmyra, Utah County, Utah. From there they moved to Spanish Fork. They lived in various sections of Spanish Fork. Ruth endured all the hardships of pioneer life with her husband.

Ruth was willing to help those in need. At one time, Apostle George Albert Smith came to Spanish Fork and asked Ruth and Charles to take a family in for the winter. He was assured that the famuily would be made welcome, but it would be impossible to provide the necessary flour. Elder Smith blessed their flour bin that it would not fail until another harvest. Whenever Ruth took out the flour for the day's cooking it would leave a cavity where the flour had been removed. But when she returned for the next day's supply the cavity would be filled. It continued thus until the next harvest.

In 1857, Ruth served as treasurer of the local Relief Society. She was also known as a devoted wife and mother. She was a kindly neighbor who endeared herself to all who knew her.

Ruth passed away in Spanish Fork, May 19, 1892.
